SUMMARY:Building to See, Building to Act: Creating interactive devices to h
elp you observe and prototype interactions in-the-wild
DESCRIPTION:Interactive and automated physical systems present new opportun
ities for creating products that satisfy people's needs. These opportunitie
s require designers and engineers to anticipate how future products such as
autonomous cars, personal robots, and digital assistants will interact wit
h users. In this presentation, I will discuss how designers can use interac
tive devices for remote user observation, interaction prototyping, and need
-finding from anywhere with a network connection. I'll show two collaborati
ons with practicing design teams where we used interactive prototypes to un
derstand the interaction design needs for autonomous systems: 1) engineers
and designers at Renault exploring currently available advanced driving ass
istance features and 2) human-agent interaction researchers at Spotify expl
oring in-car music assistants. I'll also discuss other works building on th
is method that I believe can be helpful for new kinds of interactive system
s development for farming and engineering design support.
